Among the annual stars, few of the plants can compete in size with glue. This is a unique shrub, surprising not only with its beauty, but also with stickiness. But nevertheless, “spiny” inflorescences with amazing airy flowers attract the main attention of cleoma. This is not the easiest annual to grow, suitable for anyone looking for exotic solutions among seasonal garden decorations. Cleoma is one of the most original non-resistant plants.

Cleome Spiny (Cleome Spinosa).

Prickly Cleoma is a valuable cutting plant. Her inflorescences in arrangements last up to 10 days, which does not prevent the cleome from remaining an exotic favorite of florists.

Cleoma in the garden is used, in particular, to create temporary hedges.

Selection of partners for Cleoma

Cleoma prickly will attract attention in any company. The best partners, shading the beauty of the plant, rightly consider undersized flowering summers or spicy herbs, such as oregano, sage and hyssop.

Excellent partners for cleomes will be annual verbena, cosmea, fragrant tobacco, annual phlox, brilliant sage, lavater, zinnia, dolphiniums, nasturtiums, heliotropes, calendula. Of perennials, cleoma looks good together with rudbeckia, yucca, echinacea, roses, ornamental cereals, any plants with basket inflorescences, as well as with all, without exception, decorative and deciduous cultures.

Unexpectedly, prickly cleoma combines with large climbing vegetables - cucumbers, beans, zucchini, the cultivation of which nearby allows you to achieve better pollination of both crops.

Cleoma in the garden goes well with spicy and ornamental herbs and cereals.

Conditions Required by Cleome Spiny

To select a comfortable place in the garden, it is enough to take into account the natural distribution area of the prickly cleome. This tropical and African giant is a real sun worshiper, therefore, in the gardens, especially in the middle lane, the brightest "southern" sites are chosen for the plant. Any shading for this flyer is unacceptable. Cold winds and drafts should be avoided, paying attention to the most protected and warmest places.

In the selection of soils, the main attention should be paid to good drainage: the plant will not tolerate any dampness or stagnation of water. Important for cleomera are prickly and fertility, and a light texture of the soil. This plant prefers to grow in sandy soils, fresh, well-developed. The soil reaction for prickly cleoma should remain neutral.

Prickly Cleome planting

Before planting in the soil, it is better to add organic fertilizers (the plant does not like fresh manure, the addition of compost provides the optimal texture and necessary soil characteristics). Also, a portion of full mineral fertilizers is added to the soil. For cleomes, it is important to conduct a deep digging, because the plant forms powerful and deep-lying roots.

Prickly cleom in the form of seedlings is planted at a considerable distance from neighboring plants, leaving between plants 40 to 70 cm, depending on the estimated height of the bush.

Landing is carried out with the preservation of an earthen coma around the roots. After planting, abundant watering is mandatory.

Care for scratchy glue

We can’t say about cleomes that they do not require any care, but you can’t call them difficult to grow exotics. Watering and feeding is all that is needed for success in their cultivation.

Watering for Cleoma is carried out regularly, supporting abundant flowering and powerful growth. Due to the drought tolerance of the plant, this care point is more likely not like caring for an ordinary summer tree, but like ordinary growing decorative bushes and perennials. Cleomera prickly enough ordinary maintenance irrigation, deep soil penetration in the drought season with a frequency of 1 time per week. Frequent watering to the plant is not only not required, but can also lead to the death of this beauty, afraid of dampness.

Fertilizers for prickly cleomes are no different from a program for caring for any beautifully flowering summer. This culture is content with 1 top dressing in 2 weeks. For plants use universal complex fertilizers.

Despite the status of exotics, prickly cleoma pleasantly surprises with endurance and stability. The plant is only harmed by an excess of moisture, which contributes to the spread of powdery mildew and gray rot. At the stage of growing seedlings, dampness causes damage to seedlings with a "black leg".

Regular removal of wilted flowers, blooming inflorescences for cleomes is not necessary: this procedure will not allow prolonging and stretching the flowering of prickly cleomes, as ripening pods not only do not spoil the appearance of inflorescences, but also do not affect the overall flowering time.

Ripening pods do not spoil the appearance of Cleome's inflorescences.

Growing Cleome from Seeds

According to breeding methods, prickly cleome is a typical annual plant. It is grown from seeds (bought or harvested independently).

Cleoma seeds can be sown:

  • in winter, directly into the soil (embedment depth - about 1.5 cm);
  • in the spring, but only by growing through seedlings.

It is quite simple to grow seedlings with glue. Sowing is carried out during March, using a universal loose substrate and low containers. Prior to sowing cleomy spiny soil, it is necessary to disinfect. It is desirable to carry out sowing sparse, scattering seeds into grooves with a depth of 1 to 1.5 cm. Watering is carried out before and after sowing from a finely divided spray gun. Capacities with crops must be covered with a transparent film or glass, but they need to be lifted and aired daily. With regular, accurate watering, the first seedlings may appear after 15-20 days. Dive is carried out only after the appearance of the third true leaf.

Prickly spruce seedlings are hardened for as long as possible. You need to moisten the soil carefully, because the crops are easy to lose from the "black leg". It can be planted in a permanent place only after the threat of recurrent frosts disappears. Usually glue is planted at the end of May or in June.
